Unclaimed Property Recovery

Funds your business may not know it has.

California holds over $14 billion in unclaimed property. Much of it belongs to operating businesses that simply lost track. We help identify and recover what's rightfully yours.

Kevin Butcher — Principal, Meridian Claims Group

A different approach to recovering what's yours.

Meridian Claims Group was founded on a simple observation: billions of dollars in business funds sit dormant with the State of California while owners remain unaware. Forgotten vendor refunds, uncashed checks, dormant accounts, insurance proceeds — all held by the state until someone claims them.

We do the work most businesses don't have time for. We identify your unclaimed property, prepare the documentation, and handle the entire claims process with the State Controller's Office on your behalf.

Our approach is straightforward. No upfront fees. No pressure. We only earn a fee — a maximum of 10% as set by California law — when funds are successfully recovered and deposited in your account.

A transparent process, start to finish.

We've simplified what is otherwise a complex, paperwork-heavy process. Here's exactly what to expect when working with us.

Step 01

We Identify

We search the State Controller's database for unclaimed property held under your business name and provide you with a detailed report including Property IDs.

Step 02

You Verify

You can independently verify every claim on the official California State Controller's website using the Property IDs we provide. Complete transparency.

Step 03

We File

If you'd like our help, you sign a simple investigator agreement at a 10% fee and we handle all documentation, notarization, and filing with the State Controller's Office on your behalf.

Step 04

You Receive

The State Controller's Office processes the claim and sends your funds directly to you and our fee directly to us — nothing passes through either party's hands.

Don't take our word for it. Check yourself.

Every property we identify is publicly searchable on the California State Controller's official unclaimed property database. We encourage you to verify any claim before working with us.

Common questions.

If you have a question we haven't addressed, please reach out directly.

What is unclaimed property?
Unclaimed property includes any financial asset that has been inactive for an extended period — typically three years or more. This includes uncashed vendor checks, dormant bank accounts, refunds, security deposits, insurance proceeds, and stock dividends. By California law, businesses holding these assets must transfer them to the State Controller's Office.
How much do you charge?
Our fee is 10% of recovered funds. The State Controller's Office handles all disbursements directly — your payment is sent to you, and our fee is sent to us, separately. The funds never pass through our hands or yours before reaching their respective destinations. There are no upfront costs, and our fee is only collected if your claim is successfully recovered.
How do I know this is legitimate?
We encourage every prospective client to verify their unclaimed property directly on the California State Controller's official website at claimit.ca.gov. Search your business name, find your Property IDs, and confirm the funds exist before working with us.
Why didn't the state contact us directly?
The State Controller's Office maintains a public database, but does not actively pursue businesses to return their funds. Many companies have moved, changed names, or simply lost track of older accounts. The state holds these funds indefinitely until they are claimed.
How long does the recovery process take?
From signed agreement to funds received, the process typically takes 60 to 180 days. The State Controller's Office processes claims in the order received. Cash claims are generally faster than securities or complex multi-party claims.
Can't I just file the claim myself?
Yes, you can. Filing directly through the State Controller's Office is free and we're happy to point you to the right resources. Many businesses choose to work with us because the process involves significant documentation, notarization requirements, and back-and-forth correspondence with the state. We handle that work so you can focus on running your business.

Let's see if we can help.

Send us a note and we'll respond within one business day. There's no obligation — we'll review whether your business has unclaimed property and let you know what we find.
